Panel Lining using Mr Hobby

Authored by: Bryan Lee - Mechamind

Usually of the first few steps to customizing your Gunpla or Plastic Model Kit is to fill up the panel lines with color, commonly referred to as Panel Lining.

This is not meant to be a comprehensive guide for Panel Lining but more of an introduction.

Below are the list of consumables we will be using for this guide.

  • GM402 REAL TOUCH GRAY 2 - https://ani-mecha.com/products/gm402-real-touch-gray-2?_pos=8&_sid=88473dd70&_ss=r
  • GM406 REAL TOUCH GRAY 3 - https://ani-mecha.com/products/gm406-real-touch-gray-3?_pos=4&_sid=88473dd70&_ss=r
  • GM302 GRAY (POUR TYPE) - https://ani-mecha.com/products/gm-302p-gray-pour-type?_pos=1&_sid=749aa9de0&_ss=r
  • GM300P ERASURE MARKER - https://ani-mecha.com/products/gm300p-erasure-marker?_pos=1&_sid=3c713ef5b&_ss=r
  • Super Sharp Q Tip Cotton Bud - https://ani-mecha.com/products/super-sharp-q-tip-cotton-bud?_pos=1&_sid=9ecdd2b3a&_ss=r

For light plastic colors, I recommend using the GM402 REAL TOUCH GRAY 2 or GM302 GRAY (POUR TYPE) to fill up the panel lines.

Below are the steps to fill up the Panel Lines using REAL TOUCH Marker.

  1. Use the sharper tip of the Real Touch Marker and fill up the panel lines.
  2. Use a Sharp Q tip Cotton Bud and apply some GM300P ERASURE MARKER on it.
  3. Gently clean off the excess using the Sharp Q tip Cotton Bud.

The above picture shows the part without filling the panel line (left) and filling the panel line (right). For real touch markers, up close you will see that the lines are not fully opaque.

Below are the steps to fill up the Panel Lines using Pour Type Marker.

  1. Press the tip of the marker onto the Panel Line and let it flow through the lines.
  2. Use a Sharp Q tip Cotton Bud and apply some GM300P ERASURE MARKER on it.
  3. Gently clean off the excess using the Sharp Q tip Cotton Bud.

For dark plastic colors, I recommend using the GM406 REAL TOUCH GRAY 3 or GM301 Black (Pour Type)
